ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is the presentation of design guidelines of conventional local scour countermeasures at bridge piers and abutments. Namely, solutions involving the construction of riprap mattress, Reno mattresses, cable-tied blocks and grout-filled bags are included, by specifying predictors of block sizes, for both natural and artificial, while schematic solutions are also suggested for the plan form and the thickness and topographic placement of mattresses. Recommendations for the setting of natural and synthetic filters are finally presented.
