"Establishing, Planning and Managing Protected Areas in Small Islands"

According to United Nations, 'Small Island Developing States' (SIDS) are "low-lying coastal countries/regions that tend to share similar sustainable development challenges, including small but growing populations, limited resources, remoteness, susceptibility to natural disasters, vulnerability to external shocks, excessive dependence on international trade, and fragile environments. Their growth and development is also held back by high communication, energy and transportation costs, irregular international transport volumes, disproportionately expensive public administration and infrastructure due to their small size, and little to no opportunity to create economies of scale." Due to their geographical framing as well as their morphological and ecological characteristics, small islands also tend to be more vulnerable to certain threats and phenomena, making their planning and management a true challenge, especially in what concerns environment conservation and sustainability. Therefore, the planning and management systems of Protected Areas need to be adjusted to the specific context of small islands, so that they can ensure maximum effectiveness in space organization, and fulfillment of inherent conservation and sustainable development objectives.

The Journal of Integrated Coastal Management / Revista de Gestão Costeira Integrada (JICM / RGCI) (http://www.aprh.pt/rgci/index_eng.html) is preparing the publication of a group of articles dedicated to the theme "Establishing, Planning and Managing Protected Areas in Small Islands".
