ABSTRACT
The disposal and waste treatment is certainly one of the main problems faced by the government, since the activities of collection of these materials as well as post-processing (recycling), are mostly restricted and/or inefficient, essentially in the developing countries. The scenario observed can be translated into large amounts of waste present in the beaches, leading to consequences as environmental degradation and decreasing aesthetics aspects. Despite the notoriety of the problem, few studies that quantify temporal and spatial distribution of waste in Brazil’s beaches are available. The state of Espirito Santo, with 456 km length of coastline and the highest population growth rate among the southeastern states, had no publications in this sort of research. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary qualitative assessment of spatial and temporal distribution of waste in Barrinha Beach, located at Barra do Jucu, Vila Velha city (Espirito Santo, Brazil). The Jucu river is the main distributary of the village. According to the Environment and Water Resources Secretary of the Espirito Santo (SEAMA-ES), this river is suffering impacts due the direct launch of domestic, industrial and hospital solid wastes, as well problems, such as the inappropriate disposal and landfill on the river or its vicinity. Another problem is the fast urban growth on its shores and its mouth. The methodology of this study consisted in five cross sections in the Barrinha beach with circa of 200 m2 area each. At each profile was collected waste weekly during a period of one month in a total of four day sampling campaing (October’09 – November’09) . In the laboratory, the samples were cleaned and separated by type and source and weighted The observed results confirmed the hypothesis that the Jucu River is the main source of garbage to the Barrinha Beach, a fact supported by heavy rains occurred prior to the third collection day, which increased the river competence. The plastic was the item with the highest percentage of weight (46%), followed by rubber (15%), tissue (9%), timber and fishing equipment (8%). Items that less contributed were foam (1.5%), other (1.2%), polystyrene (1%) and paper (<1%). These results shows that garbage pollution at the Barrinha beach is similar to those of most coastal areas in developing countries. The improper disposal of garbage and ineffective or absent post-treatment is the main factor controlling the pollution at the site.
