ABSTRACT
The State Association of Dive Companies of Pernambuco State (northeast Brazil), together with the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco – UFRPE and Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE, decided to initiate a project named Pernambuco‘s Shipwrecks Park (PNAPE), that involves the sinking of three decommissioned tug boats - Taurus, Saveiros and Mercurius - under controlled conditions, for both commercial and scientific purposes. The exact spots, about 12 Km offshore, between the isobaths of 20 and 30 m, were chosen upon consideration of several factors, including: seabed morphology and composition, (preferred sandy bottom local, avoiding proximity to natural reefs or banks algae); maritime traffic (the least possible); proximity of Recife Port (in order to facilitate touristic usage); etc. However, the introduction of a structure on the seabed, in general, changes the pattern of currents, sediment dynamics and, thus, leads erosion and depositional processes in the surrounding area. So it is essential to evaluate, through sedimentological studies, the conditions of substrates in areas like deliberated shipwrecks, and the changes caused by the presence of the submerged structure, to better understand the adaptation process of colonization species. In that sense, a monitoring of the artificial reef area were made, including bottom sediments characterization and temporal analyze of the sediment cover surrounding the wrecks of Mercurius and Saveiros. Due to operational issues, Taurus could not be included in this research. This article shows the results of the study between the months of August and December 2006 identifying the sediment cover in terms of statistical grain parameters and calcium carbonate content. The samples were collected monthly on both sides (boreste - BE and bombordo - BB) of the shipwrecks, always at the same spot, by divers to depths of about 30 m. The data shows bimodal distribution patterns of grain size around the Mercurius (BE and BB) in the monitored period, with high frequencies of sand and biodetritic gravel. The two sides of the shipwreck showed no significant variations between them, which shows that the wreck is not significantly influenced bottom sediments. The most frequent population (BE) Saveiros was classified as fine sand, with just little gravel. In contrast, Saveiros BB showed significant variations during the months, presenting declining amounts of gravel from August (34.36%) to December (2.75%) which might indicate the formation of a shadow area. The high percentages of gravel found in all sampling points are associated with the presence of fragments of organisms and their sizes. This assertion is supported by high rates of CaCO3 found. The visual comment of the samples, allows inferring that the composition of bottom sediments is constituted, essentially, for Halimeda and Lithothaminium, among others calcareous algae, and small amount of coral. The results obtained so far not only clarify important issues regarding the characterization of sedimentary environments of the Pernambuco continental shelf near Artificial Shipwrecks Park, but also attest the efficiency of the use of diving as a satisfactory tool for geological surveys in small areas.
