ABSTRACT
Settling velocity is an important parameter in cohesive sediments transport modelling in coastal environments, and its value is necessary to estimate erosion and deposition rates. The use of an appropriate value in numerical models is important for the reliable estimation of sediment transport rates. So, it should be considered carefully, because it can lead to significant variations in results. Suspended sediment concentration is one of the factors that most influence the settling velocity. Thus, depending on the concentration of suspended sediments, three settling velocity regimes can be defined.
Empirical formulations have resulted from the adjustment of the obtained results in experimental studies and allow the determination of the settling velocity without in situ measurements. This work gathers different formulations to determine settling velocity in the different settling regimes and analyse its behaviour and the results’ sensitivity to the variation of the involved parameters. The results showed that, for the same flow conditions and range of sediments concentrations, the settling velocity varies widely depending on the applied formulation. The work intends to contribute to the guidance of the use of most appropriate formulations in the estimation of the settling velocity at coastal environments. The formulations were also applied to the case of Ria de Aveiro. The results were compared to the values from the literature and currently applied in numerical models.
