ABSTRACT
A large part of the Portuguese Atlantic coast is at present very fragile, and urgent measures are needed to satisfy the essential requirements for its protection, preservation and promotion of the tourist attraction, and its sustainable development.
A deficit of sediments is clear all along the Portuguese coast, mainly due to the large volumes of sand extracted from river systems and port areas. Many of the works for regulating rivers, for example, the major dams built mainly since the middle of the last century, and the implementation of port structures and others constructed for local protection purposes, have contributed to this negative balance in sediment. Also natural factors, with increasing consequences, like the rising mean sea level and more frequent and intense storms, due to global warming, will contribute significantly for coastal erosion and consequent retreat of the coastal line. According to several studies, the rising of the mean sea level will reach values between 0.5 m and 1.5 m until the year 2100. Consequently, the natural protections will be destroyed and the erosive processes and modifications of the shoreline will be strongly increased by the action of intense waves and currents. These consequences are even more importants when associated to an energetic sea, like the one acting on the occidental Portuguese coast.
The precarious dynamic equilibrium of the Portuguese coast is also fragile due to the fast grow of population. Large part of the existing problems in the coastal zone are, in any way, directly or indirectly connected with the progressive urban occupation of this zone. A strong degradation of the many existing natural protections is the consequence.
Another factor that has to be reconsidered is related to constructions of heavy engineering that are implemented in order to protect locally the littoral. The coastal zone of Portugal is nowadays in a strong artificial process with a growing number of fixed structures (groins, sea-walls, breakwaters, etc.) all along the littoral. Opposite to these conventional structures, a search for alternatives that take more into account the total environmental equilibrium in the Portuguese coastal zone should be undertaken.
Numerical simulations, based on more or less complex mathematical models, are often used nowadays to study the most appropriate measures to be implemented.
This paper presents the work in progress for the definition of the characteristics of an artificial reef for coastal protection and surfing, along a stretch of particular vulnerability of the Portuguese coastal zone. With this regard, theoretical considerations and numerical modeling are used. The computational model solves a non-linear equations system of the Boussinesq type. The main results obtained, so far, are presented and discussed. The results of studies on the functioning of the reef with regard to both the coastal protection and the improvement of surfing conditions allowed to draw the following preliminary conclusions regarding the geometric features of the structure: 1. The presence of a platform under the reef, in the form of delta, is advantageous regarding the protection of the coastal area behind the structure, 2. The angle of the reef should be around 45.
