introduzir no modelo processos físicos anteriormente negligenciados: as

ABSTRACT
Tidal inlets associated with small coastal lagoons are often unstable
and can close naturally. For ecological reasons, these inlets are often
artificially opened, and allowed to evolve naturally until their
closure. This paper describes the simulation of the evolution of the
Santo André tidal inlet after its opening, through the application of a
process-based morphodynamic model (MORSYS2D), supported by extensive
field surveys.
The application of a process-based morphodynamic model to the specific
case of an inlet artificial breaching and natural closure was
particularly challenging, and new processes had to be introduced in the
model. In particular, hydraulic jumps associated with extremely strong
currents which occur in the first hours after the inlet opening are
taken into account by applying a correction to the drag coefficient.
This correction is based on previous empirical work, and determines the
energy dissipation within the hydraulic jumps based on the local Froude
number. Avalanching processes, which are responsible for the rapid
enlargement of the tidal inlet, are represented using a numerical
filter that prevents a user-specified, spatially-varying bottom, slope
to be exceeded.
One month simulations show that the behaviour of the tidal inlet in the
first days after its opening is correctly reproduced. This opens the
path for the use of such models to test different scenarios of inlet
artificial opening, considering for instance different locations and
geometries of the initially dredged channel.
In contrast, the model underestimates the reduction of the inlet
cross-section, and is unable to fully reproduce inlet closure, which in
reality occurs after 28 days. Various possible causes for this
limitation are discussed, associated to the lack of data or to the lack
of some physical processes in the model.
